| Abstract: | PURPOSE: The principal aim of this study was to focus on the process of information collection, dissemination and use within Maltese export firms. DESIGN: The study was designed around a qualitative approach of data collection so as to ensure that the main objectives of the research were achieved. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 participants operating in different economic sectors. FINDINGS: The findings indicate that beyond the establishment of a specialized department by whatever name, to spearhead the export initiative, most organisations operate informal processes both within the organisation generally and specifically within the areas of collection and dissemination of export information. The internal processing of export information was viewed by organisations as an efficient process despite that they acknowledge their strength in only one aspect of collection, dissemination and use. Maltese exporters are convinced that their success in overseas markets would not have been possible were it not among other factors, for the processing of export information. It is evident that the role of information in export success is highly appreciated and by implication the desire to collect more information, disseminate it better and use it more intensely is present within management. CONCLUSIONS: The conclusion arising out of this research is that whilst every effort is genuinely made by Maltese firms to grow their export business, issues with a lack of resources and a lack of sophistication would hamper their potential to be realized further on an international stage. IMPLICATIONS: If the information processes are predominantly informal in nature, arguably efficient but at the same time considered key to export success, the process of information collection, dissemination and use within Maltese export firms could be improved upon. |
