Abstract: In the last few decades an international social conscience has arisen that advocates the need to manage and care for cultural heritage sites and monuments with a view to preserving them for present and future generations to enjoy. With the coming into force of the Cultural Heritage Act (revised 2005), the signing and ratification of international charters and conventions, and the inclusion of six above-ground prehistoric sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List, the Maltese government has committed itself to safeguard these sites not only as national treasures, but as unique masterpieces that manifest an important and irreplaceable part of human history. My main interest in the fields of management and preservation of cultural heritage is to get a better understanding of visitor needs, perceptions, expectations and interests when visiting Malta's prehistoric sites, with particular focus on above-ground prehistoric megalithic sites. By understanding the current visitor profiles, national authorities and heritage managers alike may provide a more enjoyable and educational experience to visitors at these sites.
