Abstract: | The Greek word "nomisma", which originally meant something recognized or accepted by custom, came eventually to mean a coin. Numismatics, or the study of coins, especially these which are no longer in circulation does not, however, deal simply with the collection of coins, but with their interpretation. This involves the technical, artistic and historical aspects of their study. Not being a numismatist myself I have simply dealt with this last aspect, taking as my special field the coinage of the Sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem during their sojourn in the Island of Malta. |
