Abstract: The aim of this study was to understand the parenting experiences of families where the mother was diagnosed with a chronic neurological condition, namely fibromyalgia and multiple sclerosis. Three families participated in this qualitative research. A systemic perspective around parenting in the presence of a chronic illness was taken by interviewing mothers, fathers and their adult children in-depth. Data elicited from these interviews was analysed through an interpretative phenomenological approach from which emerging themes revealed that symptoms of illness make parenting a very challenging task for mothers with a chronic illness, whereas partner support and father involvement make a positive difference in the parenting journey of all the family members. The couple relationship grew stronger in the face of struggle and their adult children were able to maintain close bonds with their parents despite the adversities. These findings were interpreted from a systemic conceptual framework including an attachment, social constructionist, and a family resilience framework. This study provides important implications for families enduring a similar reality and for the medical, educational, and therapeutic professionals working with them.
