Abstract: | The main aim of this research is to investigate how the Challenges of Media Literacy are being addressed by the Maltese Education System. The study particularly concentrates on the historical context of how Media Education evolved in Malta and what were the main stumbling blocks along the way. It also focuses on the way forward as recommended by the main stakeholders and as envisaged by the Education authorities. Thus, the research focuses on the concems of the main supporters who embrace the issue of Media Education, as expressed in three areas: in Literature Review, as evaluated during a focus group discussion and through a number of personal experiences. In brief, the research explores local Media Literacy studies whilst it attempts to interpret respective findings in the context of the nature and implications of the relationship between students, in particular those attending state schools, and Objective 8 of the National Minimum Curriculum of 1999. Since Malta is a Member State in the European Union, the research also highlights the Challenges of Media Literacy as adopted by the European Union Commission. |
