| Abstract: | The election of Bailiff Ferdinand Von Hompesch (1797 -1798) took place on the 17th July 1797, after the death of Grand Master Emanuel de Rohan Polduc (1775- 1797) who died on the 13th July, 1797 at 10.30pm after suffering a paralytic stroke. When G. M. E. de Rohan Polduc became Grand Master on the 12th November 1775, Bailiff Ferdinand von Hompesch was amongst the candidates contesting that election. G. M. E. de Rohan Polduc held Bailiff Hompesch in very high esteem, and had hinted several times to his colleagues that Bailiff Hompesch would be an ideal successor. [excerpt] |
