Abstract: Mattia Preti was born in Taverna, Calabria, in 1613. He left his home town at the age of 1 7 years for Rome where he joined his brother Gregorio who was a relatively established painter there. On the 31 October 1642, Mattia Preti was solemnly received in the Order of St John in the Church of St Anna in Borgo, Rome. Later on Preti established himself in Naples. There, the Receiver of the Order Fra Giovanni Brancaccio, after seeing his works, recommended Preti to Grand Master Fra Paul Lascaris Castellar for the decoration of the vault of the Conventual church of St John's at Valletta.
