Abstract: One of the most renowned and prolific composers who dominated the second half of the eighteenth century in Malta is without doubt Francesco Azzopardi (1748-1809). He lived mainly in Malta, except for some years that he spent studying and working in Naples. He turned out to be a successful composer of the Neapolitan school and probably Malta's greatest theorist and teacher. Azzopardi spent his entire musical career at the service of the Mdina Cathedral, as organist and maestro di cappella, and after 1189, he was the first to occupy the post of maestro di cappella both for the Mdina Cathedral and for the Conventual's Church of Saint John in Valletta.
