Negative materials and structures : a preliminary investigation on systems exhibiting both negative poisson's ratios and negative thermal expansion with particular emphasis on natrolite

Abstract

Negative thermal expansion and negative Poisson's ratios are two material properties which have received a lot of due attention, especially in recent times. There has been the need for a substantial review of structures, systems and mechanisms regarding these two negative (sometimes described as anomalous) properties for quite some time. In this dissertation we not only provide a review of such factors but we also focus on a number of systems which appear to exhibit both negative thermal expansion and negative Poisson's ratios.
