The media consumption patterns of female inmates

Abstract

This dissertation investigated the media consumption patterns of female inmates at the Corradino Correctional Facility. The purpose of the study was to determine the role that media plays in the unique situation of incarceration and how the inmates use media opportunities in this specific institution. The privilege and punishment system serves as an important organisational mode in total institutions and this study reveals how access to media is integrated in such a system. In order to investigate such concerns, the researcher conducted intensive interviews with the total population of the institution and with a number of prison administrators and staff Analysis of the media regimens of the female inmates reflects a variety of tastes, experiences and habits of individuals who use unique strategies to adapt to prison life.
