Abstract: The emergence of community radio in Malta is comparatively a new phenomenon, unlike in other countries. Different formats of community radios have been set-up and indeed many styles were adopted to reflect the respective mission statement. This study tries to investigate any differences or similarities prevailing from the community radio stations operating in Malta when compared to their Gozitan counterparts. Despite the islands' small size, this study identifies the differences and similarities that emerge. The findings of the study shed new light on the situation of the third sector of broadcasting. Some of' these trends were previously unidentified given the dearth of local literature and studies in this field.
