| Abstract: | This dissertation seeks an explanation for the increasing popularity of manga and anime in the West, and particularly from the distinct point of view of the researcher, who has grown and lived on the island of Malta. Both media are introduced through a brief history from their first incarnations until the present. The present work also looks at: the internet as a means of diffusion, research, communication and purchase for anime and manga as well as other technological innovations that have made the genres more portable; as well as important Japanese cultural elements, principles and characteristics of styles featuring in these media. |
