| Abstract: | This research project assesses the influences of internet technology on journalism, and the implications they may have on news. Such tools are developments which have been brought about by the internet itself, and include blogs, social networking sites and wikis. A qualitative research method was used, where a series of interviews were carried out with editors of news websites, and in some cases the editors of national newspapers, in Malta. The interviews carried out are intended to gauge the perceptions of participants on a variety of questions related to the influences of internet technology on journalism, namely those mentioned above. From the study it emerged that respondents consider internet technology to have brought about changes in the media, and have particularly left a negative effect on newspapers. Despite varying opinions on whether such internet technology has been beneficial or deterring to journalism, the majority of respondents do not consider blogs, wikis and social networking sites to be a credible source from where journalists may obtain reliable news, as they lack verification and are simply a form of comments and opinion. |
