Abstract: Great Britain entered the First World War on August 4, 1914, when its ultimatum to Germany expired the previous midnight. On August 3, 1914, on the eve of Britain's entry in the conflict, Government Notice No 124 was published in Malta to institute and regulate censorship. A number of other Government Notices and Regulations consolidated, amended or repealed the official enactments which were periodically published to regulate censorship. The English text of these enactments is reproduced as an Appendix to this article. The various Notices etc. refer to a Censor, a Press Censor, a Postal Censor, a Senior Censor and a Military Censor. It is not always clear whether these designate different functions in the same officer, or different officers. [excerpt]
