Abstract: THE aim of this study is to show how the present Palace of the Castellania came into being, to pick out the different threads running through its history and to highlight the varied roles it has fulfilled in the life of the Maltese community during the two hundred and thirty years of its existence. During this span of time it has witnessed three changes of foreign rulers over the Maltese Islands - the Order of St John of Jerusalem, the French under Napoleon Bonaparte and the British monarchy- and has participated in the vicissitudes resulting from these changes of flags.
