Abstract: Research shows that the intimacy involved in a relationship must be counterbalanced with the maintenance of a degree of personal autonomy. This study investigates the role of autonomy as perceived by each partner in the pre-marital relationship. The review of the literature explores different aspects of autonomy and its importance in strengthening couple intimacy. A qualitative research design was employed and data was gathered through in-depth interviews. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. Results indicate that autonomy is perceived as essential within such couple relationships and performs specific functions. These were identified as a number of themes, namely: as a renewal process for the self, as a renewal process for the relationship, as a support for diverse social relationships, as an indicator of couple functioning, and as a support for change. Autonomy is given significant importance by Maltese couples and appears to benefit both the individual partners and the relationship.
