Beliefs and desires : are they compatible? : a qualitative study on the relationship between religious influences, sexual attitudes and experiences among youths

Abstract

This qualitative study explores the relationship between Roman Catholic beliefs and influences on youth's sexual attitudes and experiences. Perceptions and experiences of how youths live the relationship between their religious beliefs and their sexual desires and experiences were highlighted. Moreover this study raised questions on whether religion helps or inhibits young people develop a healthy sexual self. For this investigation, semi-structured interviews in focus groups discussions were used. The data was analysed using Interpretative phenomenological analysis. Main findings revealed that the relationship between religion and sexuality is a complex phenomenon. Most youth were not educated in bridging their developments of sexual urges and desires together with their religious beliefs. For some participants, the Catholic Church is still a reference point for the expression and understanding of sexuality. Most of these youths addressed human sexuality from a restrictive and moralistic perspective. Other participants expressed the view that such an organized religion does not offer a positive and reasonable way of living one's sexuality.
