The participation of residents in homes for older persons

Abstract

It is a known fact that the population is ageing and the consequences of this phenomenon have been well documented, as more people will be needing long-term care, and the demand for resources is always on the increase. Where possible these people need to be kept in the community, at least partly cared for by informal carers. But we can rest assured that Maltese homes for older persons will be full for quite a long time. In the meantime work has to be done in order to make these homes 'a place in which people can live, not a place in which bodies are stored and kept clean and well fed' (Brearley 1975: 96-7). Studies show a correlation between responsibility and the well being of residents, and between high activity levels and longevity (Langer and Rodin 1986; Stones et al. 1989). This is one of the reasons for which a country such as Sweden, includes among its guiding principles for old age care the principle of influence and participation (Hedlen & McDerment 1985: 202). It is also a reason why it is important to carry out research on the extent to which opportunities for participation exist and are encouraged in Maltese homes for older persons. This research is hoped to raise awareness about what is lacking in such settings - how things could be different if residents were encouraged to participate, making life more satisfying for them.
