Abstract: This study analyses the Maltese death metal subculture. Death metal music has a number of followers in Malta. In the study the behaviours, attitudes, and motivations of Maltese death metal heads are explored. This study utilises a qualitative approach and semi-structured interviews in particular. Findings reveal a hierarchical structure within the Maltese death metal subculture with intra-scenic rivalry between bands competing for a veteran status. At the base of the hierarchical pyramid there are women, 'posers,' coloured individuals, and other music scenes. Rivalry towards other scenes exists as well. Findings reveal also that the aggressive content of the lyrics together with displays of aggression during 'gigs' promote desensitization in scene members. The study ends with recommendations for future research.
