Abstract: The main objective of this study was to evaluate alcohol aftercare services in Malta from the point of view of the alcohol dependent. The role of aftercare services in maintaining sobriety was examined against a theoretical framework. The study was also intended to bring out comparisons between the respondents' life before and after they decided to stop drinking. The research study originated from the hypothesis that there is life after alcohol and that any individual who seriously decides to participate in a rehabilitation programme, can indeed, lead a fulfilling, alcohol free lifestyle. The data for this study was obtained by semi-structured interviews carried out with ten individuals who have been through a treatment programme at either 'Zerniq' (Sedqa Alcohol Services) or OASI Foundation and are currently receiving aftercare services from their treatment facilities. The findings were analysed and discussed in light of the literature review. The role of the social worker was also examined, particularly during the aftercare phase of treatment. Finally, recommendations were proposed so as to improve current aftercare treatment services in Malta.
