Abstract: This thesis explores the reasons why the Corradino Civil Prison was built, covering a period of 30 years, from 1820, when the first initial plans for the new prison building started to when it was inaugurated in 1850. The nature of this research is historical and it is based on the archival method and the historical approach as the method for the analysis of the data gathered. The thesis starts with a short introduction of the prison, followed by a literature review where a more in-depth historical overview is given, starting from the ancient world to the 19th century. Afterwards in the methodology section, an explanation of the method of research used and the problems encountered during the research are discussed. This then leads to the analysis of the data found which answers the hypothesis of this research, that the Corradino Civil Prison was built because at that time, it was unfit and wholly inadequate for the purpose to which it was to be applied, that of rehabilitation of prisoners. The research shall conclude with the acceptance of the hypothesis that Corradino prison was needed due to the old prisons not having adequate room and facilities to act as an effective prison.
