Abstract: This study will try to explore the reach of drug abuse by Maltese youths, and the strategies that are employed by youth centres to face this problem. The target is to gain insight into what is actually being provided for young people in youth centres. I this dissertation I tried to understand the extent of the effect of drug abuse on Maltese youths, I studied the insight and the strategies employed by youth centres in face of this problem. Through this research I gained insight into what is actually being provided in terms of informal education for young people in youth centres. I was interested in the perceptions and experiences of youth centres' leaders and those of the youths that frequent the centres. I decided to carry out my research with six different youth centres found in different areas of Malta and Gozo. A letter was sent to the leaders of the six youth centres, these agreed to collaborate to the study and later a form was administered to the members, the target comprised 36 youths between the ages of 14 to 24 years. The research was conducted via one-to-one, in-depth interviews with the leader/s of each respective youth centres and the youths via unstructured focus groups. When I performed my experiment I found out that even though there is a substantial increase in the education about drugs, the drug problem has not diminished. It seems that youths today are more prone to use soft drugs and they are not afraid to use them, some drugs like ecstasy has become a custom with party goers. My results are consistent with my hypothesis that substance abuse by Maltese youths has increased, and that youth centres are aiding them to keep away from this problem.
