Abstract: This study explored shame narratives of individuals who have self-identified as being shame-prone. The research question was based on exploring the complexities of early shame memories in light of attachment injuries and how individuals make meaning later in life. Despite the extensive literature on shame as an affect, the qualitative experience of individuals living with shame is under-researched. A qualitative research approach was adopted to gain an in-depth understanding of shame narratives, exploring the relevance of shame to attachment theory. A narrative analysis was undertaken using semi-structured interview guides with three participants. Following the analysis, one coherent story was developed. The following dominant narratives emerged from the findings: ‘The Family Narrative’, ‘The Shame Narrative’ and ‘The Adult Relating Narrative’. Each dominant narrative included its own themes and frozen narratives. Frozen narratives have been described as trauma memories in which the individual recalls in an incoherent manner. These were highlighted within the findings supported by the participants’ verbatim statements. Furthermore, to support the elicitation of the participants’ shame experiences, the process dynamics during the interviews were also illustrated. The aim of this research was to provide a coherent story for the hidden shame experiences. It has provided a broader understanding of shame narratives and the struggles of individuals who are shame-prone.
