Abstract: Research shows that magical thinking escalates under situations of extreme stress and uncertainty, or potential life changing situations. One possible explanation for this is that magical thinking seems to offer a coping mechanism so as to reduce stress. Addiction is seen as a condition capable of producing large amounts of stress. This research study is concerned with whether or not Magical Thinking is displayed by persons diagnosed as having addictive personalities. Through the structured use of semi-structured interviews and a problem oriented survey, eighteen male individuals enrolled at sedqa's Drug Rehab community, Komunita' Santa Maria, were interviewed and Magical Thinking was investigated in their thinking styles. In seventeen out of the eighteen participants Magical Thinking was or is still evident. The results indicate that Magical Thinking is used by individuals having an addiction as to both regain a perception of control and as a means of justification in maintaining a negative behavior.
