Abstract: The study focused on experiences of members of the Maltese-Indian community in being involved in two cultures. It examined identity issues through the process of acculturation and the development of an ethnic identity, with emphasis on generational differences between the two. The experiences of three first generation immigrants and three native born Indians were explored in order to determine factors that impact the formation of a cultural identity. This was done through the use of thematic analysis. Three of the participants self-identified as 'Indian', two self-identified as 'Maltese-Indian' and one self-identified as exclusively 'Maltese'. Out of all the factors that were examined, the most influential in the determining of a cultural identity include ethnic socialization, experiences of racism and perceived acceptance by Maltese. Awareness of the impact of culture on identity is important for professionals dealing with individuals of any nation or ethnicity.
