Alcohol rehabilitation services for women problem drinkers in Malta and Gozo

Abstract

This dissertation shall examine and describe the services currently available, for female problem drinkers in Malta and Gozo. Services available are statutory (Dar Zemiq), non-governmental organizations(OASI), and voluntary organizations (Alcoholic Anonymous). These services would be analyzed and their suitability for female problem drinkers shall be examined. This study shall be based on literature review. Women problem drinkers, have different needs from men problem drinkers and their addiction also brings about different consequences on themselves and those around them. These differences in needs and consequences shall be examined in detail. This study shall also include women's opinions on the services available. This will be carried out in the form of structures interviews with women who are presently making use of the services available. The findings shall be discussed and analyzed. Special attention will be placed on the role of the social worker within this field of alcohol addiction, with special reference to social work with women problem drinkers. This dissertation shall end with several recommendations based on the findings and other material relevant to this subject.
