Abstract: During mid-April of 2005 field work was carried out on the beaches and sand dunes at Berkoukech which forms part of the Tabarka embayment (north-western coast of Tunisia) with the aim of preparing a faunal list of the Diptera collected, identifying stenotopic (dune-specific) species, and to make general observations on the biodiversity encountered. A total of 60 species in 33 families were collected. Eight species were truly stenotopic. The others were Diptera associated with the marine shore. In general, the species encountered were common with a wide geographical distribution in the Mediterranean. In terms of biodiversity, the area is considered poor. Possible factors for this include an increase in human interference, absence of Posidonia banquettes on the beach and sparse vegetation cover on dunes.
