Children of glass or steel : a study on resiliency in children of alcoholics

Abstract

The objective of this research, is to provide a better understanding of how children living with an alcoholic parent adapt to their environment and become resilient, despite being faced with adversity. This study focuses on their academic and social functioning which are integral aspects in the child's life. A sample of six children who have been living with an alcoholic parent were studied. Data was obtained through a triangulation method, whereby two standardized tests were administered to the parent and one interview was conducted with the teacher of the child. The Behavioural and Emotional Rating Scale was used to recognize strengths, whilst the Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Scales measured adaptive behaviour. The results showed that most children had characteristics of resiliency, however showed many weaknesses in other areas namely academic functioning and communication. These children also soften their pain through developing a strong relationship with a significant adult, who, very often, was their teacher. The results suggest that these children are resilient in some ways, however they are also struggling in many areas, especially when compared to other children their age. Identification of these children and ways of intervention need to be established in order to help these children develop coping skills. Such strategies may begin at school. The thesis concludes with recommendations for further research, policy and service development.
