Abstract: This study aims at bringing together the critical material concerning the relationship between Giraldi and English writers of the sixteenth and seventeenth century. Chapter I deals with the role played by Giraldi in the revival of Senecan tragedy and in the development of tragicomedy. Shakespeare's indebtedness to the Italian as regards the subject matter of Othello, Measure for Measure and Antony and Cleopatra is discussed in Chapter II. Chapter III focuses on the relationship between Giraldi and other English writers such as Whetstone, Greene, Painter, Spenser and Marlowe.
