Abstract: | The objective of this piano recital is not only to offer a form of musical experience, but also to present a miscellaneous programme that reflects the work done during these three years in building a new pianistic technique and repertoire. The planning of the programme required thought from the structural angle in order to present a varied and balanced recital. In my choice I considered not only the period and style, but also the intensity of the individual pieces and the way they would relate to each other and the structure of the programme as a whole. The haunting introduction of Mozart's Fantasia has for long stood in my mind as an intriguing way to start a recital, and therefore was my first definite choice on this occasion. Mendelssohn's Variations Serieuses offers contrast because despite it being still in the minor-mole and having a sustained quasi-religious theme, it is a work that is primarily concerned with pianistic virtuosity. Also, Mendelssohn as a composer, and particularly in this work, fits in as an appropriate link between the classical and late romantic music. The Brahms' Ballade Op.10 No.1 is in D minor, thus keeping within the same tonal area of the previous piece, before moving onto the major-mode in the second Ballade. Brahms' music, with its strong emotional intensity, offers an appropriate conclusion to the first half. The second half is conceived to offer a different scenario, presenting two highly contrasting works from the twentieth-century. The selections from Shostakovich's 24 Preludes Op.34, are brief and concise and easily appeal to the audience. On the other hand, Messiaen's Canteyodjaya is a challenging work and should offer the audience an innovative acoustical experience. The purpose of this document is to offer an intellectual and analytical insight on the works performed. Albert Einstein, the great mathematician and scientist wrote: "Imagination is good but it must be controlled by the critical facts". A detailed analysis such as the one presented in this document, helps me as a performer to grasp the inner logic and architecture of a composition. This, together with the help of intuition and informed imagination, should bring me to a closer understanding of the composer's VlSlOn. |
