Abstract: This year marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, and as such, the World Health Organization has, for the first time, designated 2020 as the Year of the Nurse and Midwife. The intention of this designation is to both recognize the contribution of nurses and midwives to the health of the population and to lead the development of a flagship report (in May 2020) on the state of the international nursing workforce. So, what is the state of critical care nursing and its contribution to health care outcomes, and will this need to change in the next decade?
