Abstract: Early in June 1798, the French fleet consisting of 472 vessels, under Napoleon Bonaparte appeared off the shores of Malta. The Grandmaster of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, who had governed the Island from 1530,could not or would not offer resistance against such a force and he capitulated to Napoleon. On 12th June, 1798, Malta was handed over to the French Republic and soon after, the Order of St. John left the Island for ever.
