| Abstract: | Research in the past two decades found significant differences in the travel patterns of men and women, particularly among those who are married with children. The findings on women's travel choices seem to reflect women's need to juggle work and household responsibilities. The participation of women in the labour force has increased but women still have to hear the main responsibilities for non-work trips especially for shopping activities. This study aims at identifying gender issues in two Maltese villages in relation to employment and accessibility. The two villages chosen were Mosta and Pembroke. The information was gathered by means of a questionnaire. From the analysis it was clear that women are becoming more dependent on the car and they are making less use of the public transport and other modes that are sustainable. Therefore, it is important for urban planners and policy makers to involve more women in the decision making process. The key aim is to increase accessibility for women particularly within village centres to encourage walking and decrease the neecl to travel forther clistances. |
