Abstract: In this dissertation I have focused my attention on one aspect which, in my opinion is of extreme importance - 'The Chamber of Commerce' as a non-partisan body, with particular reference to the political issues arising in the period 1919-1921. I have tried to show how the Chamber, in the interests of the mercantile community and commerce of the Island as a whole, rose above the political situation, and only interfered in those political issues which directly concerned it. After the political turmoil of 1919-1921, it is interesting to note that the Chamber made 'non-interference in politics' a condition which all members were obliged to adhere to. Although, this had previously been taken for granted it was nevertheless abided by. For the sake of clarification, and in order to avoid unnecessary ambiguity, certain terms have been used which require explanation. During the years 1857-1921, there was a predominance of the Italian language in the administrative functions of the Chamber. During this period, "La Camera di Commercio" (translated for the purpose of this essay as the 'Chamber of Commerce'), was a body made up of the twelve members of the mercantile community who directed the "Borsa" which was made up of the Electors and Soci of the social club. There fore, a member of "La Borsa" need not necessarily be a member of "La Camera di Commercio."From 1921 onwards, when the English Language began being used for administrative purposes "The Council of the Chamber of Commerce" was the body of twelve merchants who directed "The Chamber of Commerce" which was made up of the Electors and Soci of the social club.
