Abstract: The writing of Maltese contemporary history is still in its initial phase. The existing published works on Maltese history that try to deal with the post-Second World War years in general, are too superficial to be considered as a serious study of the period. The only exception is perhaps that of Denis Austin, Malta and the End of The Empire. The difficulty in working on this period is the accessibility to primary sources, as the most important are not yet available, either because they are in the hands of private individuals, or because the Authorities are reluctant to open them up. Nevertheless, the period cannot be ignored, even though for the moment tentative studies only can be done. This dissertation is thus only an attempt which tries to throw light on the immediate post-war years, which saw the rise of the Labour Party and the restoration of self-government in 1947. It is high time for similar tentative studies to be done in trying to construct as far as possible the whole picture of the last thirty-five years of Maltese history. We have just experienced the end of an epoch and it is incumbent on us to try to record it in the best possible manner. This is a debt that we owe to our successors. Lastly, I wish to thank all those who collaborated with me in writing this dissertation. In particular, I wish to thank my tutor, Mr. R. Vella Bonavita, Mr. P. Muscat Terribile/of the Office of the Clerk of the House of Representatives for allowing me to use the Parliamentary Records, Mr. J. Caruana, of the Palace Archives, Dott. DePasquale, of the National Library, for letting me know of the precious records of the 1945 National Assembly, the Staff of the Old University Library, Miss Sylvana Cristina, for helping me to correct the script, and Mrs. Marlene Bugeja, for patiently typing it. Finally, I wish to thank also my friends and my parents for their constant encouragement.
