Abstract: The evolution of the Adriatic microplate and its basins is the result of multiple orogens involving the relative motions of the African and European tectonic plates since the Triassic. Characterized by a series of NW-SE directed thrusts and flexures this microplate is rich in structures and sediments that are favourable for the generation and accumulation of hydrocarbons especially biogenic gas. The area has been explored since the 70's for its gas continues to attract exploration interest to the present day. This dissertation gives an account of the evolution of the Adriatic microplate and its hydrocarbon potential and presents a case study of a seismic reflection survey as an exploration tool in the area. The principles of the reflection technique are also reviewed. The case study is based on the interpretation of a vintage 2D seismic survey using OpendTect seismic interpretation platform to generate a structural model of the subsurface in the Plio-Pleistocene section. The generated model shows a medium sized prospect situated in the north of the study area at a depth of approximately 1100 m and corresponding to the early Pleistocene. An evaluation of the prospect suggests a low geological risk and total recoverable volumes of gas estimated at over 1 billion m3 , making it an economically viable prospect.
