Abstract: The coordination compounds formed by the interaction of the Schiff base 2-[ (3-hydroxypropylimino )methyl]naphthol (NaphHPrH), with the metal salts of Cu2+,C o 2+ C 2+ M 2+ F 2+ d La2+, were prepared and characterised by infrared, ultraviolet, nuclear magnetic resonance and atomic absorption spectroscopy together with magnetic susceptibilities studies. Spectra obtained showed that all the metal ions were in a coordinated form. But, UV and IR spectra obtained for the Co2+ complex indicate that even though coordination occurred, this took place with only a part of the whole ligand molecule. Atomic absorption spectroscopy was the only technique used in this study that gave an indication the possible structure of the complex obtained. The most common geometry resulted to be ML2. Magnetic susceptibility studies performed revealed that all transition metal complexes synthesised were paramagnetic at room temperature but could possibly be antiferromagnetic at lower temperatures. Tests for the antiferromagnetic behaviour of the synthesized complexes was not performed. The lanthanum complex resulted to be diamagnetic. Qualitative analysis showed that the chloride ion of the metal salts was retained in some of the complexes obtained, therefore indicating that these products are ionic.
