Abstract: Bone and skin are the two organs that together contain some 80% of all the connective tissues found in the human body. Both show deterioration with estrogen deficiency. This deterioration can be prevented and even reversed with appropriate and adequate estrogen replacement. Atrophy of the dermis after the menopause is due to a decrease in the dermal skin collagen content. The genetic influence on collagen content may not only limit itself to the onset of osteoporosis but may also be related to the development of osteoarthrosis, another common debilitating condition associated with the aging process. Estrogen replacement therapy leads to an increase in bone mass by increasing the collagen levels in bone. This increase in collagen content leads to an increase in bone strength and thus a diminution of osteoporotic fractures. Sex steroids play a vital role in the integrity of connective tissue of an individual. This constitutes a strong argument for long-term hormonal or hormone-like therapy. Early changes in collagen markers can predict long-term changes in bone density with therapy. The cardioprotective effect of hormone replacement therapy is attributed to the favorable serum lipoprotein profile brought about by the treatment in postmenopausal women.
