Abstract: Data communications have previously been dominated by analogue circuity. With the introduction of digital signal processors however·, all the functions of modems can today be performed digitally. The aim of this project was to study haw for a general purpose 16-bit microprocessor (the 8086) can go in achieving these modem functions using software. As this processor was found rather wanting when operating at bit rates of 300 baud and above, a special-purpose IC (the FAD) was very briefly investigated. Due to lack of time, only the filtering of this IC was evaluated.
