Abstract: The galleon developed from the carrack and the Order of St John operated with such a vessel even when it occupied Rhodes. The galleon San Giovanni carried four masts and was armed with great and small guns. It was employed as a transport ship but it proved to be an efficient war vessel also. The exploits by Guidotti effected by the galleon of the Order in the Levant echoed throughout the Mediterranean. The knights had a great galleon built at Amsterdam but even in Malta there was the necessary workforce and another one was built locally. The Order of St John operated also with a small version of the galleon namely the galeonetto. The galleon disappeared from the Maltese harbours by the second half of the 17th century.
