Abstract: The Grand Harbour of Malta was well known and offered safe anchorages since time immemorial. Birgu was the centre of all maritime activites before the coming of the Order in Malta and at Marsa all ships took on the necessary supplies of drinking water. After 1530 the Grand Harbour changed rapidly to meet all the exigencies of the ships of the Order together with Marsamxett Harbour which provided the necessary quarantine amenities. In Malta safe havens at Marsaxlokk, St Paul's Bay, St Julians, Mellieħa, Salini, and other places supplemented the necessary space for merchant ships and perhaps alleviated the traffic congestion from the Grand Harbour. The beautiful havens at Gozo like those of Mġarr, Marsalforn, and Xlendi were utilized quite frequently because of the constant merchantship traffic to and from Sicily.
