Abstract: Since 1950 when in Malta, the need for organized library services started being felt, a number of librarians managed to obtain professional education abroad. In 1969, these professionals together with others interested and working in libraries, founded the Malta Library Association (MLA) today the Malta Library and Information Association (MaLIA) which held various courses on aspects of librarianship. This helped to pave the way for the University of Malta who in 1986 held the first Diploma in Library and Information Studies (DipLIS). This long essay, through a questionnaire survey, attempts to trace former students and to discover their perceptions regarding the Diploma course and its consequences for them.
