Abstract: Alcoholism has always been considered a delicate subject for discussion. The alcoholic will deny the problem; family and significant others are very often too embarrassed to admit that it exists and finally no one really knows what causes it and how to stop it. This first part of this essay will consider the various types of drinkers that one comes across in a society such as ours; not many are alcoholic, but some of them will eventually become so. It will then discuss what has been acknowledged today as the Disease Concept of Alcoholism ". This professes alcoholism as an illness that can only be arrested and not cured and this only if the patient refrains from drinking alcoholic beverage in any form. It will refer to the known types of alcoholics, how they vary from one another and how abstinence from alcohol can bring some into recovery. The third part looks at the other theory on the arresting of the alcoholic condition, The Learned Behaviour Concept of Alcoholism " and the theory that the alcoholic can 'learn' how to control drinking by 'unlearning' alcoholic drinking. The final part takes the form of a critique and analysis of both theories and looks at various aspects of the theories. No recommendations are proposed because none are considered appropriate to the subject under discussion. It is foolhardy to approve of one theory at the expense of the other. No one as yet truly knows why the alcoholic will not stop drinking and not only truly knows how the alcoholic, in many instances will stop and remain stopped. Science and medicine have not come up with a solution to date.
