Abstract: Every child has a right to live within a family. Children who cannot live with their own parents have to be looked after by someone else, and usually this means living either in a Residential Home for Children, or in a Foster Home or an Adoptive Home. Formal fostering in Malta is still in its' initial stages compared to other countries. There are still quite a number of issues concerning fostering that need to be improved to give the best service possible. In fact, in Malta the issue of legal policies about fostering is still being discussed Even though the Adoption and Fostering Unit started operating only a few years back, fostering in Malta is not something new. In the past, children were fostered by members of the extended family, such as grandparents and aunts. The reason behind this research is that I strongly believe that children have a right to live in a family. Therefore I aim to explore what is being done in preparation for fostering and also during the fostering procedure.
