Abstract: The main aim of this study is to see whether deprived areas such as Hal-Mikteb catalysis an environment where funtional illiteracy can breed. We will focus mainly on parental attitudes towards attainment that is educational inspiration, literacy of the home, parental interest in the child's school work, together with incentives of the home and social status. Chapter one is intended to establish a definition of Deprivation and lliiteracy. It will also take into consideration various studies done with regards to illiteracy and environment. Also we will try and establish the various handicaps an illiterate person faces in today's modem society. Chapter two explains our hypothesis and the methodology used to carry out the case studies. Chapter three will give an account of the results obtained. It will include an analysis of case studies compared to literature review and a conclusion, where we try and give some recommendation on this aspect.
