ŻAK in process : an appraisal of Żgħazagh Azzjoni Kattolika

Abstract

ŻAK - a national Roman Catholic youth organization present in 27 parishes around Malta. The objective behind this research is to find out whether the organization is actually fulfilling its mission statement. This led the authors through a quest in analysing ŻAKs goals by means of a quantitative study involving members of the same organisation. This study gives an insight into adolescence theories. It also gives a general overview of the organization's history and role in youth work. This was complimented by references to existing literature regarding youth work and adolescent development. With this in mind, this study also examines the relevance and role of ŻAK in modern society as well as the effects transmitted through its activity. The information presented in the study is directly extracted from the experiences of the organization's members. Discussions are related to the role of the youth worker in this organization's set-up as well as to the efficacy of the voluntary work being done. The analysis shows that ŻAK is actually reaching its objectives with a discrete amount of success in certain areas. The information obtained led the researchers to understand the current situation of the organization as well as to put forward their suggestions in order to better fulfil ŻAK objectives.
