Young people's concept of entertainment

Abstract

This research aims to identify young people's concept of entertainment; whether they are satisfied with the type of entertainment available in Malta at present and which, if any, are the improvements they would like to see in this respect. Drawing on various literature, this research attempts to highlight the functions of entertainment together with any benefits derived from it both on an individual and a social basis. Moreover, the literature review stresses the significance of enjoyment of such entertainment, as a means by which to stimulate one's holistic sense of well-being. By means of information collected from questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, this research determines that the vital ingredients contained in young people's concept of entertainment are a sense of relaxation and 'fun'. Furthermore, this research also establishes that young people perceive a lack of variety in local entertainment presently available. I chose this area from my research because dissatisfaction with the 'social scene' is a topic which has often arisen both at my place of work and with my friends. Moreover, as a student at the Programme of Youth Studies I have realised the importance of entertainment not only as a means by which young people socialise with their peers, but also as a medium by which they form a social and personal identity. I also believe that the results of this research may benefit all those who, directly or indirectly, provide for young people's entertainment and thus help them offer a suitable service in this respect.
