Abstract: In a previous article in this Journal I discussed the architectural achievements of Col. George Whitmore (1775–1862) in Malta and Corfu between 1812 and the death of Governor Maitland in 1824, when his Civil Works command with its financial allowances were restricted to Malta. Major-General Sir Frederick Adam (1781–1853), already commanding the military, now became the second Lord High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands. He wanted Whitmore to continue there, but he was only authorised to maintain an oversight of Corfu’s fortifications (Fig. 1).1 This article discusses Whitmore’s later work in both islands and subsequent developments in architcture and art education.
