Abstract: This research project is part of a larger project about 'The status of young people in Maltese Society', which is being carried out by the Institute of Youth Studies at the University of Malta. It deals with the participation of young people in sport and other physical activities. The project asks whether or not, beyond compulsory physical education, our young people still take part in sports and other physical activities. The level of participation of a sample of four hundred (400) young men and women between the ages of 16 and 18 is established. Reasons behind youth withdrawal from participation in sports are dealt with. Young people's right to play and leisure, and its possible denial or restriction is examined. The problem is studied, results presented and suggestions given. It is being suggested that young peoples' participation in sport should continue throughout adulthood.
