AIDA Malta 2024 proceedings presented at AIDA 2026 in Catania

The proceedings of the AIDA Malta 2024 conference were presented during this year’s AIDA conference, held in Catania, Sicily, by Prof. Michael Spagnol, from the Department of Maltese and Dr Kurstin Gatt, from the Department of Middle Eastern and Asian Languages and Cultures.

The 16th Conference of the International Association of Arabic Dialectology (AIDA ) took place at the University of Catania between 23 and 26 June 2026. AIDA is a leading international organisation dedicated to the study of Arabic dialects and Maltese, from linguistic and sociolinguistic perspectives.

The volume, titled Rooted in the Mediterranean: Studies in Arabic Dialectology (AIDA Malta 2024), brings together the proceedings of the 15th AIDA Conference, which was held in Malta in 2024. Published by Malta University Press, the peer-reviewed publication consists of 25 contributions by scholars working on different aspects of Arabic dialectology, language variation, sociolinguistics, and language contact. The proceedings were co-edited by Prof. Ray Fabri, Dr Kurstin Gatt, and Prof. Michael Spagnol.

During the conference in Catania, copies of the publication were presented to the AIDA President, Prof. Karima Ziamari, as well as to Prof. Cristina La Rosa, one of the leading members of the AIDA 2026 organising committee.
